One of the areasecommercehas grown into is manufacturing. A push for more convenience, efficiency, customer satisfaction, and cost savings is creating evolving supply chains and sales mechanisms that are eroding the line between B2B andB2C businesslines.
Manufacturers who aren’t investing in ecommerce may not be positioning themselves as B2B companies leading within their industries now and in the future. They’re also giving up critical foundations that might be relevant, as more companies sell directly to consumers. Data is a critical resource for any business. It helps you make the best marketing, development, and customer service decisions. Of course, gaining many of the benefits outlined above requires knowing how to put ecommerce to work for your business. Here are a few tips for effectively using ecommerce as a manufacturer.
1. Create an engaging website.
Your ecommerce site should draw people in and provide them with helpful information to support their buying journey. Include product descriptions with high-quality photos, blog posts, or articles to educate buyers, and easy contact methods for anyone who wants to reach out another way.
If you’re serving retailers or vendors but still want consumers to be able to see some of your content, consider creating a password-protected section for B2B clients. Clients who log-in might be able to see current price lists, more detailed product specs, or technical manuals, for example.
2. Equip sales staff.
Going digital doesn’t mean you’re taking people wholly out of your process. But it does mean sales staff may work with clients in new ways, including via email and online chat boxes. Equip sales staff with the right training to ensure they can close the deal via new sales channels like chat, or use ecommerce solutions alongside traditional ones.
3. Provide a personalized catalog.
Use client behavioral metrics and preferences to provide personalized catalogs when someone comes to your site or logs in. Are you selling to vendors and retailers, direct to consumers, or a mix? Are your products technical enough that buyers need some education to make the right decision, or are the options fairly straightforward?

Decide which of your products you will sell via ecommerce. It’s not always possible to sell all your products online, as some may be too regulated or complex. Others might be so specific that there isn’t a market to support them digitally.
Create a list of all the products you want to include in your ecommerce store. Then separate them into categories to make them more accessible for clients to find and browse.
3. Build your ecommerce store.
Luckily, you never have to start this process from scratch. Instead, follow the steps below to use existing technology and customize it for your brand and needs.
Select your ecommerce platform. Choose a platform that has experience in serving manufacturers. Ensure that all the functionality you want to support on your site is available, either as a built-in feature, an app, or an integration.
Choose a store theme. Choose from existing themes that work for manufacturers or have one designed specifically for your store.
Develop your store’s design. Work with a web developer or team to customize the chosen theme to match your brand and business needs. Remember that simple, convenient designs are typically best.
Product descriptions. Add product listings, including unique product descriptions with images. These serve two purposes. First, theycreate SEO value, so your pages start showing up in the search engines. Second, they help customers make decisions about which products are right for them and work to persuade the customer to make a purchase.
4. Create your ecommerce team to support your store.
Finally, know that your job isn’t done just because you’re ready to launch yourecommerce store. While you can take advantage of a great deal of automation and DIY options, you still need a support team for your store. You might want to consider sales reps, customer service reps, account and billing reps, and technical reps to ensure full support for your customers, your store, and your business.
When people mention ecommerce, many people think of consumer-facing giants, such as Amazon and eBay. But even these industry leaders are getting involved in B2B ecommerce.
As a manufacturer, you have several choices. You can choose to do nothing and let the world eventually pass you by as it goes increasingly digital. You can choose to rely on third-party resources and markets to keep your products visible online. Or, you can take control of the future and launch your own ecommerce store today.
So I have read "E-Commerce Evolved" by Tanner Larsson and it was quiet interesting, it's really recommendable. It's just a pity that he sometimes didn't go into detail on which tools he is using for his strategies. He writes about his e-mail campaigns: Every single new subscriber gets his own e-mail campaign f. e. he starts with an introduction campaign with 3 e-mails (welcome, about us etc.) then a Core Offer Campaign (introduce to product, what people are saying etc.) and then a Bucket Campaign. Are there any tools I can schedule these campaigns with? Like, everytime a new subscriber subscribes, he should receive email XY on day 2 and email YZ on day 10. Any recommendations for good tools?
I have been tasked with taking ownership of our e-commerce channel (sales have declined massively in the last two years and this is the last real push at it).
Currently we sell on M1.9, EBay and Amazon (FBA).
We are part of a larger business so we are required to use their ERP which is dreadful for commerce, it integrates (poorly) into Magento and that’s it.
I am trying to find basic software that would help with our listing management. I’ve come across the likes of Channel Adviser but there just seems to be a whole load of features we wouldn’t need at the moment. Our inventory and buying is all done through our ERP st present.
Could anybody recommend anything that I could look into?
Additionally I’d be really interested into what software other e-commerce businesses are using. We had virtually nothing but I have begun exploring software such as Helium 19 and Zak Analytics.
We launched about 3 month ago with some test product to test the market. We have a professional managing our marketing and do our social media in house. So far we have great results from our marketing on everything but our actual conversions to purchase.
Our thoughts on why we have failed on conversion are:
Price is too high – this seems like the obvious answer but there are comparable competitors that manage to sell at higher and equivalent prices
Shipping costs are separate – I know, I know… we should just build it into the price
Poor Branding – We are amateurs in all thing’s ecommerce and especially branding
Need more products – We are only selling one product at the moment. We are planning to create a $99 bag and possibly just sell our trauma kit separately.
Here are some notes and stats from our marketing manager:
· Facebook ads are still performing really well. They have a lot of engagement and shares (free exposure).
· Budget is $18/day. We spent $126 this past week and $1,028 since the start of the campaign on 5/14).
· Stats this week are
o CTR is 5.45% which is about the same as last week and our goal is >1%.
o Landing page conversion is 46%. This shows people are finding this really valuable. (Goal 20%. Industry average 15-17%)
o Average cost per lead was $.64.
Now at 1,365 new contacts since the start of the campaign (5/21).
The average open rate across all the checklist emails is 26%.
The value emails started going out and have an open rate of 18% which is around industry average. I hope to see that go up as we get regulars into the automation and there isn’t such a lag in them receiving an email from us.
We have 3 weeks left of value ads before we run out.
Bag Campaign – Facebook Ads
We launched on 5/21 and are running with a budget of $30/day. We have spent $1,061 to date.
CTR is 2.23% and our goal is >1%. This shows people are interested in the ad.
Cost per click is at $1.94.
Engagement continues to be good on this ad as well with a good amount of shares.
Overall we are trying to determine why people aren’t purchasing the bag at a greater rate since there is so much interest in the product and topic. Some reasons could be:
Landing page not optimized
Price (bag price and shipping)
We tested two sales pages to see if that would increase sales and then let us know that the landing page was the issue.
After adding 2 sales page and 2 order form page to test on ClickFunnels. We are seeing a 3.6% add to cart rate (Shopify avg is 2.5%), but there were no sales in the last week and a half.
In conclusion, I believe we have found a good market but not the right product/configuration. I am hoping this forum might be able to point out some flaws in our approach that we may not be aware of or confirm that our thoughts above are correct.
