Why do e-commerce companies make more money connecting consumers to third party merchants rather than providing direct sales?

Take for instance, Pinduoduo. In 2017, the company switched from providing direct sales (i.e. purchasing the products themselves and reselling them to consumers) to strictly connecting user to 3rd party merchants. For what reasons is the approach of acting as the middleman more profitable for companies like Pinduoduo?
