Thoughts on Advertising Overcoming Price Differences

As the title says – what are you thoughts on heavy advertising overcoming price differences for essentially the same product.

For example, Shopify and Woocommerce are very similar – and they get the same job done. Although Woo has a bit of a learning curve. But, Paid vs Free – and Shopify wins because of their advertising.

Thoughts on if this strategy will work for other items? For example, if i have a bike helmet – Model Bell XYZ at $150ish and another site is not advertising heavily, but pricing at $120.

Will heavy advertising and pricing higher (to pay for the ads) make up for a price difference of say 20% or more? Or do you think this is just fruitless.
