How effective is SEO?

I always see online that SEO is super super important and I know honestly nothing about it. When I look at pricing for SEO tools everything seems super expensive and way out of my budget for my website that hasn’t really caught on yet. Does anyone have any stats or insight that explains why it is so important? Thanks
