EDIT: After re-reading my post it kind of starts out like an ad, but I assure you it is not. I am a real person seeking real answers. 😛
One of the main threats to eCommerce these days is card skimming. That's where an ecommerce site is hacked and the attackers install a script which siphons off customer's credit card details as they make purchases on the hacked store. One thing I am not finding though is what impact this actually has on the average small business.
When a small ecommerce store finds that their cart has been hacked, what do they actually do about it? Sweep it under the rug and tell nobody with no consequences? Report it to the FBI and local law enforcement and wait for a response?
For a specific example, what realistically happened to the owners of the 2,000 hacked stores in this article? Were half of them fined out of business? Or did they just remove the infection, report it to the authorities, and move on? https://www.bankinfosecurity.com/payment-card-skimming-hits-2000-e-commerce-sites-a-15000
If anyone has any personal experience with this or knows of any stories they can share, I'd love to know more.
