Any one ever hired a customs agent at a US port? Cause I think I gotta and I’m lost.

I have a Shopify site, but I custom design products in China (factories found on and order inventory. In the past I’ve used something called ‘air freight’ which was door to door delivery, and all duty and tariffs were somehow bundled in to the deliver cost.

This time I am placing an order of 1000 wooden toys, and the factory is putting them on a boat. Factory rep told me I have to ‘hire an agent at the port’ to pay customs. I have no idea what this entails! Any crumb of info would be appreciated!!!!!
