How to keep Ecommerce Customer retention high?

Me and my brothers are working on our second eCommerce project, which main focus will be pet food (over time we'll be working on our own brand if it goes well first year).

My question is, what would be a good thing to do, in order to keep people coming back?

The good thing about pet food is that it's something they'll have to eventually get again. My ideas are these:

  • For every customer's order attach a physical brochure with discount coupon like 20% so they have a reason to buy from us again (at least 2-3 times in a row so a micro-habit is in place – you know, when they bought with us 3 times and their pet is happy, why not buy 4th, 6th, 9th)
  • Create a "membership club/card" for free so they can get 2% off from every order lifetime (basically better prices)
  • Bulk discount (buy 2 – 5% off ; buy 3 – 10% off etc.)
  • Powerful branding
  • Retargeting (those who buy 5kg, retarget in 14 days.. those who got 10kg retarget in 21 days and etc – just example)

What do you guys think? What would be your ideas to keep retention high? Of course, we're not there but we will.

We also thought subscription model, but from our research, we found out that multiple eCommerce projects tried it and our market is just not ready for that right now. People here are just not ready that they get charged each month for something as in the US or different countries. We're of course keeping the door open for this option in upcoming years.
