The “Anonymous Buying Journey” of eCommerce Customers

Attribution is more difficult than ever for eCommerce stores. But not only because of tracking issues caused by iOS 14 updates.

People shop and make purchasing decisions differently. There are a lot more options. And the journey people take to make a purchase is not as "pretty & predictable" as before.

Want to increase conversion rates?

Know the components that make up your customers "anonymous buying journey" i.e. the steps people take that you can't, and will never be able to, track.

Here are a few:

– People who use your product in public and others see it
– Word of mouth from customers
– Organic social posts that get zero engagement
– Ads that don't get attributable click-through or conversions
– A random blog that talks about your product

This is the kind of granular activity that moves customers through their buying journey faster, and only realizes gains when the customer's ready and has real buying intent.

You won't know its happening. But its happening.

You gotta read the anonymous signals and develop a clairvoyance about how the business ecosystem, i.e. all of the moving pieces and customer touchpoints, impact conversions.

What anonymous activities have impacted your business?

Am I missing something with Coinpayments?

Hi all, I'm currently trying to set up a webshop that utilizes coinpayments to accept crypto as it has a large selection of coins and what I thought would be a simple transaction-to-fiat process but that was far from the case. My site's items would sell for roughly $30 usd with $6 shipping, but when running through a test transaction I realized how horrible the fees are. I've hooked it up to convert to fiat via coinbase API but no matter what it seems like you're screwed. When establishing auto-conversions to fiat it first converts selected currencies into bitcoin, which I don't take issue with, but the flat fee is ridiculous when withdrawing bitcoin.

For the $36 test order, 0.0004 BTC is eaten up by coinpayments as a standard fee which is about $14. The margin drops significantly, but I don't know what to do about it? Ideally, the shop would accept and convert automatically so I don't have to worry about handling it manually every time, but I can't have that if a huge chunk of profit is just lost with each transaction.

Am I missing something with coinpayments, or is it just bad? Most of the consensus I've seen on reddit has found it to be the best payment processor but I find that hard to believe? Can anyone give me their thoughts and tips on where to go from here, because it feels like I've hit a wall.

Change in PayPal Fees

I've read about this in 5 places now, but it's still not clear to me. If someone comes to a site and chooses to use PayPal… what will the seller fee now be for that? Some things I've seen make it sound like less, some make it sound like more.

Ecommerce Site With No Branding

Do you think eCommerce sites with no branding will eventually fail?

I see competitors getting huge traffic volume from their branded names. The website I am working on only has an exact match domain, so it is essentially just a keyword as its main source of traffic.

I struggle to gain higher rankings on other product pages in this niche because maybe Google just doesn't see us as an authority. Is branding the site the way to go?

Thoughts?

Demand Curve: 7 ad types that increase click-through rates

We've spent millions of dollars running ads for brands like Outschool, Imperfect Produce and Microsoft. At Demand Curve, we’ve worked with over 500 startups, meticulously documenting growth tactics for all growth channels. This post also incorporates what we've learned from our agency, Bell Curve.

Here are seven ad types that have proven to increase click-through rates (CTR), with examples of each. Clone them to test in your own social ad campaigns.

Address common complaints and questions directly in your ads, as they will help eliminate objections upfront and encourage clicking to learn more.

Customer reactions

If you're selling a consumer product, it’s likely that some of your customers have posted product reviews, unboxings or recommendation videos on their social media accounts. You can use your customers' user-generated videos in your social ads — with permission.

Search through Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for posts that mention your product. Reach out to the customer and ask them if you can use their content in an ad campaign, and subsequently, compile the most positive reactions into a video ad.

This works well because dramatic faces are attention magnets. Make sure the thumbnail photo shows a strong emotional image. People will click because they can't help but want to see what provoked the emotion. User-generated reaction videos also highlight your products' “Moment of Wow.” If users care enough about your product to make a positive reaction video, their energy is contagious. Your ad audience will connect your product with a strong positive emotion.

You versus the competition

Comparison ads anchor your product against something your audience already knows. This works well for both ads and the landing page your ad will lead to when clicked on. Try positioning your strongest value proposition — the most valuable promise you're making to your customer — against your generic competitors.
