Trying to validate a product with less than $500 – does this seem like a good strategy? Any advice appreciated.

I'm currently working on validating a new product that I want to build a brand around – it's a particular type of dog bed. It's going to be a one product brand/store, at least initially – I'm trying to keep it simple.

I've currently got a few samples being shipped to me from an Alibaba manufacturer – the product has been custom made to my specifications so fingers crossed the quality is there. Anyway, this is my rough plan of action and associated costs.

  • Source and order product samples – $120
  • Use a Shopify store (with free theme) – $29/month
  • Spend 2 – 3 days working on copy for the store myself – Free
  • Create brand palette/identity/logo using Canva – Free
  • Product photography (with friends dog, and professional photographer). I will also be shooting/creating ad content during this session – $150
  • Spend a week building a trustworthy store – Free

Once the store is completed and live, I'm intending on spending $200 on FB Ads in order to try and validate my product. My product will retail for $90 – so I'm unsure if this amount of adspend will be enough or if I'll have to increase my budget initially. I'm a UX designer by profession, so website/content creation is something I'm quite good at, but I have a lot to learn in terms of marketing/advertising – i'm currently doing a lot of reading into this!

If you were in my situation, what would you do? Increase my FB ad budget? Utilise another advertising channel? The aim is to validate (or fail!) as quick as possible.

Any general feedback is welcome.
