Protecting yourself from liability – How do you make sure you get all required tests/certifications for a product you don’t have experience selling?

Ok, so just for an example, say you have something like a metal flask or something of that nature that you want to sell, but you have no experience selling that kind of product. Is there a way to find out if you need to get some kind of test or certification in order to sell it? I mean in the flask example, it is something people drink out of. It is also made of metal. Do you have to get some kind of lab test or any kind of certification or inspection for something like that to be safe? How do you find out if you need to do anything for specific products in order to keep yourself safe from liability?
