Do membership programs make as much sense when there is a hardware component?

I'm planning to sell a unique device for around $50, that can be used standalone, but is mainly driven by $20 "programs" that I would create. Should I sell the programs individually, or offer a monthly/yearly membership for them?

Examples:

  1. Imagine a store that sells a VR headset. They also sell programs and experiences for it.
  2. Alternately, think about a programmable digital Halloween mask. A store sells the masks, but also different animated looks for it.

I've studied membership programs and I know one of the main benefits is better conversion rates… but is that benefit lost if customers have already purchased a piece of hardware?
